Beverley Elliott M.D.Children have always been the main focus in my professional life. My first job as a registered nurse was in paediatrics. That was followed by a few years of wor travels, and on returning to Canada, I ultimately deciding to attend university. That led to medical school and a paediatric residency at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON… all said and done by the age of 40! My career as a paediatrician began in private practice in Burlington, ON, but after 7 years, I was recruited to rural SE New Mexico where I practiced for almost 20 years until retirement. I couldn’t have asked for a better professional opportunity as I was able to use my expertise in both hospital and office settings, and because it was in a predominantly Hispanic community, it was also a wonderful cultural and educational experience for myself and my family… made great friends and developed an obsessive love of Hatch green chili.
Now in retirement, I am pursuing a life-long dream of writing for children, focusing on the formative years when learning to read is critical in establishing a lifelong desire to read. My third children’s picture book THE DOOR IN THE WALL, has just been published ( March, 2023 ). My first 2 books, GREYSON’S SHOES, and GRAMMIE’S SUITCASE, are based on situations in the early life of my first grandson, Greyson, who is autistic. Because my stories are written in rhyme and beautifully illustrated, they are fun to read and children engage readily. Both education and entertainment for the child and the reader are my objectives in writing. And perhaps in a subtle way, I can still have some influence on family relationships through encouraging reading to children. I am very fortunate to have a friend who is a wonderful illustrator and artist, Anna Maureen Costello, and it is she that creates the visual life of my stories.. I am the mother of 3 children, the grandmother of 5 wonderful and witty grandchildren, ages 7-18, and my partner/spouse of well over 50 years says he will hang in there and continue to cheer me on. |
